THE CHOLMONDELEY CASTLE GARDENS

2010 Cheshire Garden of Distinction

Cholmondeley is a vast garden in a romantic and beautiful setting with splendid views of the Gothic castle. Visitors can follow The Somerset Lodge Walk, The Camellia Walk and The Terrace Walk or simply wander at their own leisure. Care, however, should be taken not to miss The Silver Garden in which Bakewell ironwork and silver leaved plants play homage to the Queen's Silver Jubilee. The Rose Garden is the most recent addition to Cholmondeley having been completed in the early 1950's.

Cholmondeley Castle, near Malpas in South Cheshire

The centrepiece of the garden is undoubtedly The Temple Garden in which visitors can admire a small lake with its giant Koi carp, a rockery, a waterfall and The Temple, a beautiful piece of architecture taken from the gardens of the Old Hall, the home of the family before the Civil War. In this garden on a summer's day, visitors can rest in the shade of an Arbutus unedo amongst Cistus, Berberis, Hibiscus and Philadelphus; the variety in this section of the garden reflecting that of the garden as a whole.

Opening Hours: 5th Apr - 27th Sept; Wed, Thur, Sun & BHs (incl. Good Fri); 11.00am - 5pm
Admission: Adults £5 Children: £2 (reduction for groups of 25 and over). Dogs allowed on leads.

THE SANDSTONE TRAIL WALK

The Sandstone Trail in Cheshire

Stride out along the ridge on the Sandstone Trail, a wonderful 55km walk from Frodsham to Whitchurch with tremendous views over Cheshire and beyond.

The original Sandstone Trail officially opened in 1974. It has now been extended, so it now links the towns of Frodsham and Whitchurch. This not only makes it more accessible by public transport, but also means you can enjoy some of the excellent facilities available in each town.

The Trail has been split into three sections of 17km or just over 10 miles, which most people should find an enjoyable days walk. Because the route follows the sandstone ridge, there are few facilities along the Trail - most pubs, cafes and shops are a short distance away. Please check opening times and always take some food and plenty to drink with you.

THE SKYDIVING EXPERIENCE

For those of you who like to make your pulse race a little faster, then why not try out sky diving. The Parachute Centre is based at Tilstock Airfield just south of Whitchurch (about 6 miles away).

Skydiving gives you a sensation you cannot explain to those who haven't skydived. You have to experience it to understand.

You can imagine the sensation of sitting on the edge of the aircraft and falling earth bound. You imagine it being similar to driving over the edge on a big dipper or in a fast car over a hump-back bridge and the wierd sensation you get in your get in your stomach. More Info ...
