The School

The School was built in the mid 1800's to a classic Victorian village school design. With its high ceilings, to aid air flow and minimise disease, and high windows, to keep the children looking forward and not out, were a common feature of the period. The school closed to its last pupils in 1982 and was opened as a public house by the then 6th Marquess of Cholmondeley in 1988.

The Cholmondeley Family

The Cholmondeley family have lived at Cholmondeley in Cheshire since 1200. The present castle was built in the early 19th century by George James Cholmondeley, 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley (1749-1827), Chamberlain to the Prince of Wales, and has been home to three succeeding generations. Lady Cholmondeley, wife of the 6th Marquess of Cholmondeley, lives here today. Her son, David, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley and the hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain of England, lives at Houghton Hall in Norfolk which was originally built in the 1720's by Sir Robert Walpole. Since his succession in 1990 Lord Cholmondeley has carried out major restoration to Houghton, which is open to the public during the summer season. He now divides his time between Cheshire and Norfolk.

Cholmondeley Castle Gardens

The gardens at Cholmondeley Castle were originally laid out when the 1st Marquess of Cholmondeley built the castle between 1801 and 1804. Located off the A49 Whitchurch to Tarporley road, less than 1 mile from the Cholmondeley Arms. The gardens have been extensively replanted since the 1960's under the direction of Lady Cholmondeley.
